The Youth at CFWS – Wednesday 14th August, 2019

Our Youth Programs are inspired through the very best knowledge and resources that the world has to offer, but more importantly, they are specific to Youth training and ALWAYS at the forefront of that is “What is best for the kids”.

“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”

This is one thing our Wild South Youth programs believe in 100%, in fact, it is also true for the CrossFit Wild South adult programs too.

Our Coaches are not afraid to use that saying in the gym with our kids and teens (and adults too, of course) and it underpins our passion for our Kids and Teens as they develop skills and strength through learning safe movement.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”.

We need to focus on the life long development of strength and movement, so not only do we want to prioritise safe movement practices, we have to because we know it works better that way in the long run for all of our Community.

This means that all of our athletes, (young or not as young as they once were) have to ‘earn to right’ to increase intensity (such as load) by demonstrating that they can consistently replicate good movement.

That doesn’t mean doing 1 good rep while the Coach is watching them. It means rep after rep, set after set.

It happens often, we hear “Coach can I add some weight because I can lift more” or similarly worded requests to go up to the next size up kettlebell, med ball or dumbbell (very rarely do you see our youth with barbells – at least until the Teens sessions). Our Coaches understand that Kids and Teens (and often adults too) are always keen to progress to a more challenging load, after all, more load means more strength (over time) right?

Not always.

If our Coaches haven’t seen enough consistency in their repetitions, free of movement faults, then we deny the request followed by an explanation as to what they need to do in order to ‘earn the right’ to progress.

Because “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”.

That’s how we keep our Wild South Youth (and Community) safe.

That’s what happens here at our Wild South Youth Programs as The Brand X Method Training Centre.

Coach Stacy is the only Professional Youth Certified Coach (PYCC) in New Zealand.
