Catch up with the Crew – Tuesday 2nd July, 2019

Becs is pretty much one of the OG Crew, in fact, she is one of Stacy’s first people he coached through under the Starter Class program that used to happen before our fundamentals. She saw very early on that the benefits to her needed to be shared with her family, husband Phil and son Kurtis (Andreas made a cameo appearance for a while too) and encouraged (that’s probably a Becs word…) them to come on board.

Becs is currently an Invercargill City Councillor and has chucked her name into the ring for the role as Mayor so you will be able to keep up with her on the campaign trail over the next 3 months or so. Apart from our high fives and general positivity and awesomeness in the box, if you want to support Becs in running for Mayor, you can purchase one of her handy tote bags (super handy now that Central Government thought it was a good idea to ban plastic bags as of 1st July). Donations can be made at the box OR by bank deposit to 02 0924 0034251 06

As always, the best way to get to know Becs a bit more is to take some time to chat next time you see her in the box.

Name: Becs Amundsen

Nickname: Becs

Life Level (Age): Only as old as I feel – so it varies

Job: I like to call myself a Community Activist, but for fun, I am the Deputy Mayor (until October 12).

When did you start with CFWS? : 8 Dec 2012 – the day before my 36th birthday

Your Fundamentals experience? : I started the same day as Owen which was quite intimidating. I was pretty unhealthy and spent my birthday unable to move.

I remember messaging Ruth and saying I am really sore I don’t think I should come back tomorrow and she said – it’s ok we will use other muscles so it will be fine.

And for some reason, I just went along with it and came back.

Your CrossFit experience to date? : It’s been and continues to be quite a journey. I have had periods of huge gains and others of slow recovery. Coming to Crossfit has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I have learnt that I am actually strong. I have learnt what I am capable of. I am amazed that I continue to learn every time I show up.

Crossfit has made me be patient and pay attention to my body. I have also met some of the best people I know – who are wise, resilient, funny and all-around awesome.

(Sorry I have noticed most people keep this short, but if you know me you will know I like a lot of words…….).

Life outside of CFWS? : I like to get shit done, mostly community stuff. I’m a bit of an organiser, do a bit of camping (as long as I have a good bed and a shower) and would love to say I read a lot of books but the truth is I mostly collect them. Feminist and proud of it.

Any movements you particularly like? : Love me a Power Clean

What movements are you paying particular attention too? : Engaging my core

Anything coming up on your to-do list?? : My goal is to be the next Mayor of Invercargill

You can follow my Councillor and Mayoral journey HERE

If you had a warning label for yourself, what would it say? : Perhaps ask Phil

What do you think the most unpleasant sounding word is to you? : Can’t (except when it comes to rope climbs)

What is the first thing that you do when you wake up? : Start thinking about something

Have you read any good books lately? : I am currently reading Michelle Obama’s autobiography

If you joined the circus, what would your act be? : I have been told I am a bit of a ringleader

What makes you laugh more than it really should? : Kurtis and Andreas

What makes you angrier than it really should? : Nothing. I only get angry about stuff that I should be angry about

What life lesson have you had to learn the hard way? : At the risk of being too deep how to believe in myself and not give a f%$# what others think.
