Making burpees great again…
Actually, they have never been not great, maybe just a little misunderstood.
They are an ideal example of why training to move well for real lifelong fitness is central to the CrossFit methodology.
In essence, they are simply a movement that has your body getting down onto the ground and returning it to standing again, and we can do it with varying degrees of intensity and complexity based on our needs at the time.
A fairly handy life skill in my book, and one of the reasons we like the concept of “Birthday Burpees”. Not so that you can be “punished” for being another year older, but simply so that you know that as you add another year to your life that getting down and up again is something you can continue to do.
“Our understanding is that the needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind. One needs functional competence to stay out of the nursing home. The other one wants functional dominance to win medals.”
